Nashville Notes            CROWNS: The Gospel Musical, by Regina Taylor, is in rehearsal for it's Nashville premiere, Thursday, January 26th at Christ Church Cathedral as part of the Church's Sacred  Space for the City series. I had a chance to converse with the playwright and learn a bit more about her career and the history of CROWNS.

The-Other-Coast                                                                                                               I had the pleasure, no strike that. I had the honor to share an experience titled The Swell Show at Club Barre at Vermont, in Los Feliz. Simply put, The Swell Show is delicious, magical perfection starring Cortes Alexander (of The Tonics, and Liza's at the Palace). Upon arriving at the venue, which is well known for its warm and wonderful staff, fine menu choices and generous drinks, it became clear that the word was out: Cortes Alexander was finally performing on his own. This show was far too long in the making, and judging by the who’s who in the packed audience, I was not alone in that assessment. For the record, every person in the room (including the staff) stood and cheered at the end of the evening, for a length of time that was both remarkable and well deserved.

Marilyn Maye                                  It's a brand new year and it's not just the same old/same old wonderful performers returning. Sure, the greats are great – who wouldn't want to start January by running to another run of shows by the sensational Marilyn Maye at Metropolitan Room, singing some of her most requested numbers from the last few acts she's done that have won her award after award? Speaking of awards, as January winds down, excitement winds up for the annual Nightlife Awards show at The Town Hall (January 30), bringing back 2011's critics' picks to pick up their trophies and perform.

Nashville NotesNashville has been chosen as the first city outside of New York to participate in Disney Theatrical Group's "Disney Musicals in Schools" program, and here's how it happened. As a presenter of Broadway tours, TPAC works with The Broadway League and this year, at the Broadway League's Spring Road Conference, Disney announced that they were looking to take this program, after 2 years in NYC, "on the road" to other cities across the country.

Baby Jane Dexter is a savage when she's working. No stone is unturned. It goes with being a truth teller. For several decades, she's been one of the best things to happen to cabaret. Teachers and directors even bring students to observe her unique style. Too, legions of fans return over and over. They are never let down. She's an original in a world filled with cookie cutter, overrated neophytes who get by on run-of-the mill vanity shows.

The-Other-Coast              Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, by Jane Chambers, deals with themes of love, self-discovery and loss that are as unique in this play, as they are universal in life. The production currently running at The Stella Adler Theater and produced by The LA Women’s Theatre Project, is one that handles its subject with grace. In reading director Dee Jae Cox’s program notes about the production, she refers to it as both timeless and as a lesbian story. I will agree that the story is timeless, but to call it a lesbian story simply because it’s principal characters are lesbian, does the play a grave disservice. The piece is a slice of life with a point of view to be sure, but it is even-handed, never preachy and it is universal. In the hands of a lesser director Bluefish Cove might be the last piece of “lesbian theatre” you’d ever want to see. This mostly insightful production will have you wanting more.

Nashville Notes           Out Front on Main is a classy and classic example of what has come to be called "storefront theatre," the kind you'd expect to find in cities like Chicago, San Francisco or Seattle, except Out Front on Main is in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Artistic Director George Manus has converted a former bridal shop at 1511 Main Street, into a fun and intimate jewel box of a theatre that would be the envy of many a theatrical impresario in our urban age. Seating 50, Out Front has everything a theatre needs, from a nifty little lobby whose walls are covered with company posters, to a mobile tech booth, eclectic seating and a swell stage space that currently sports Manus' handsome set for Tracy Lett's really weird play Bug.

The dog days of summer cannot stop cabaret.  The shows must go on….. and they do!!  Read on to learn how you can get in for free to an event by winning our contest.

With many cabaret choices, and limited exposure, what is a new-to-cabaret or semi-uninformed music-lover to do to decide what show to see?  My advice is always to go where they can be sampled!  When I was a kid, I discovered my new favorite breakfast cereals by sampling them in that Kellogg’s Variety Pak where you got a small box of each of several cereals along with the usual suspects of Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies.  The cabaret Variety Paks that pack a lot of entertainment include the variety shows where you can hear many singers in one night, often offering previews of their upcoming shows.  This Wednesday, August 3, at 6:30 PM is the free outdoor Tudor City Greens concert (see ad on our website’s home page).

Memo to: Oprah…still haven’t watched the final shows…oh wait, don’t care! What the TVJ does care about is Anderson Cooper’s new show and Rosie's new show. Stay tuned!

Daytime Report:

The TVJ’s daytime wish has come true!!! No, not the fact that “AMC” and “OLTL” have been saved from the guillotine (SPOILER: due to contract negotiations, “AMC” will begin in January after a break, and “OLTL” will make the transition without a break…maybe), or that the spectacular Constance Towers is back on “General Hospital” as Helena Cassadine,Constance_Towers but the fact that the two most annoying characters, not only on “GH,” but probably in all of daytime, are gone.
