At the beginning of each month, I generally peruse the upcoming celebrity birthday list to get ideas for my column. January runs the gamut from Adam Lambert (age 29) to Joan of Arc (599), with stops along the way for Elvis Presley (76), Richard Nixon (98), Cary Grant (107) and Mozart (255).

Hello, NiteLife Exchange Readers! This week’s column is (hopefully) appearing before everyone can disappear for that yearly festival of food and dysfunctional family fun we call Thanksgiving. And what better topic for this pundit to ponder at the beginning of the holiday season, than family entertainment, and Disney movies, in particular? Tangled, Disney’s computer animated, new fangled version of the Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel, is the 50th official Disney animated feature, a milestone in movie history and the latest legacy of a tradition dating back to the world premiere of Snow White and t he Seven Dwarfs on December 21, 1937.

Hello, NiteLife Exchange Readers! It’s great to be Thinking and writing this column again after a three month hiatus. For those of you new to these musings and unfamiliar with their format, let me (very) briefly reiterate some thoughts from last summer’s first column, “Sondheim at the Cabaret,” which, along with my other efforts, can still be read elsewhere on this site. Hello, NiteLife Exchange Readers! Your first day at the beach. Your first love. Your first pint of Haagen-Dazs. No matter how many times that initial experience is repeated, it’s the first one that lingers in distant memory, treasured, precious, returning to consciousness when you least expect it. The upcoming PBS broadcast of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific on August 18th as part of its "Live at Lincoln Center" series, brings back such a memory.

Hello, NiteLife Exchange Readers! It’s August. You can almost hear the NYC nightlife and theatre community simultaneously slowing down and revving up at the same time. Droves of performers are driving their bodies off to the beach or the country while the wheels of preparation in their minds are steadily turning towards new shows for the fall. There’s still four weeks of summer left to share vacation time with loved ones and enjoy some solitude.

Hello, NiteLife Exchange Readers! First off, I’d like to thank those of you who sent me comments on my first piece last week entitled Sondheim at the Cabaret. The response was gratifying, and leads me to believe there’s a need for a column that puts the nightly events in the cabaret world in a larger perspective. This week, our Cabaret Pick is Elizabeth Sullivan on Sunday. She’s a lady who celebrates her birthday during this week, too (May 22). She’s a graceful, dignified, full-of-heart performer and a thoughtful, artful songwriter who does not shy away from real feelings. Whenever I see her perform, it’s a tenderly tendered mix of smile-inducers and tear duct activation.
