Memo to ABC…once again…”UGLY BETTY” You tried to kill it, but it will never die. This show and its star, America Ferrera, were class acts (well, mostly) and went out with style, grace and heart. The closing "Ugly Betty" logo, with the "Ugly" fading away was the perfect moment. She's just "Betty," and we will miss you, Betty.
Our Girl Kirstie!
Well, last week our girl just outdid herself. She decided to spend the week doing the work of each of her employees. Why? Because she is tired of everybody whining and since she has done each one of their jobs at various times in her life and career, she’s gonna show ‘em how it’s done!
They, in turn will be Kirstie. Ok, Monday is housekeeping day as she
becomes housekeeper Magdalena, trying to clean the house and do the laundry as “Kirstie” yells and screams at her. Next we have Jim on Tuesday. I must confess, seeing Jim lying on a chaise lounge, pretending to be Kirstie, twittering away, wearing a white mumu that is “a hat away from a klan robe,” was second only to our girl going ass over tea kettle as “Jim” tries to unclog the pond. Since he “doesn’t know how to do anyone else’s job, including his own,” our girl is being followed around by the assistant’s assistant, Kyle (see: unclogging the pond), as Wednesday finds or girl becoming her assistant, Kelly. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! Lemur poop cleanup, followed closely by doggie poop cleanup on Thursday was just, well…gross. But it’s Tracy, the stylist who takes on the “does it make me look fat” persona of our girl as she looks at outfits (“Did you bring me Dolce & Gabbana?”), that gave way to Kirstie’s final comment on the day: “If I never have to do anyone else’s job again it’ll be too soon!” It’s a learning experience for our girl, as she realizes how much work that each of her people really do (” Magdalena should get a raise just for being funny!”). Then she catches Jim sneaking Burger King’. Stay tuned, as Kelly and Kyle rat him out with a hidden camera! And you wonder why I love her? This week, they all did a “twitter-vention” with out girl, as it turns out the mole in the household is none other than…Kirstie, tipping off the tabloids with her incessant tweets!
Calling all Gleeks! And you know who you are! They're back, with Jonathan Groff and Idina Menzel as lead singer and choral director of Vocal Adrenaline, the vitually unbeatable group. But are they really? Highlight of the show? Well take a look, and you tell me... http://www.hulu.com/watch/142123/glee-vogue
“Lost” Report
Last week, it was all Desmond, Desmond and more Desmond and
Henry Ian Cusick, to boot! Talk about a side time story! “Happily Ever After” was one of the most confusing episodes yet. There were so many cross references to other characters, times and places that I got “Lost” in the shuffle. And then this week it was Hugo, Hugo and more Hugo. Jorge Garcia sees both real time and sideways
time collide in a big way, when he's reunited with Libby. Rather than regurgitate it all, just check out Bill Ervolino’s site, because he’s WAY more thorough on this episode than I could ever be. Bill’s “Completely Lost” site can be found (sic) at http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/completelylost
Season Finales
“Being Erica” came to a close last night with more twists and turns, doors to be opened and the hope that this wonderful Canadian import returns for yet another season. FYI, Erin Karpluk, who plays Erica, also pops up as Cate’s boss at the radio station on “Life Unexpected.”
“Southland” …and what a finale it was! Chickie Brown IS THE POLICE!!!!!!
Arija Bareikis rocked as Chickie in the finale, as she nabbed a serial rapist who had been posing as a cop. Totally out of left field and with a smack down of the all-boy network. Well done “Southland,” and we’ll see you soon!
Quick Dish Notes
S. Epatha Merkerson will be leaving “Law & Order” at the end of this season, after appearing in over 380 episodes since joining the show 16 seasons ago. No word yet on when her final episode will be.
“Jersey Shore” heads back to, well, the Jersey Shore. Seems they can’t gain entrance ANYWHERE in Miami. Oops! HBO has cast Diane Lane in the role of Pat Loud in “Cinema Verite,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the groundbreaking 1973, PBS documentary, “An American Family.” Now THAT was reality TV! Best TV line of the week: "Good Morning America." Juju Chang to U Conn Huskies' hoop star Tina Charles: "You're a tall drink of water." Robin Roberts' follow-up: "and worth the climb." Hmmm...now just what did you mean by that, Robin?
Soapbox Moment of the Day
With every episode, “Life Unexpected” just sucks me in
more and more. It’s my new “Waltons,” you know, that show that just makes you cry and feel like a dork? Ok, so does “Extreme Makeover,” but there are tons of those shows. Remember the week Will Geer died? It was the same week that Grandma returned to Walton’s Mountain after her stroke and…well, Little Paul and I cried through the whole episode. Laugh if you must, but you cried too, and as Joan Rivers’ says, “You know who you are!” Goodnight, John-Boy.
IN MEMORIAM
Dixie Carter, best known as the outspoken Julia Sugarbaker on “Designing Women,” passed away on Saturday, at age 70. "This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband, Hal Holbrook, said in a written statement. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy." A native of McLemoresville, Tennessee, Carter was well-known for her work on Broadway, with roles in Sextet, Pal Joey, Master Class (as Maria Callas) and Thoroughly Modern Millie, (as Mrs. Meers).
She was married three times; first, to Arthur Carter, with whom she had two daughters, actor George Hearn and actor Hal Holbrook (May 27, 1984), remaining with him until her death. The couple appeared together in the film That Evening Sun, her last credited role. “Designing Women” ran on CBS from 1986 to 1993. Carter also starred on the drama “Family Law” from 1999 to 2002 and appeared in seven episodes of “Desperate Housewives” in 2007, for which she earned an Emmy nomination My favorite Julia Sugarbaker rant? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV86kehwkc0 . My favorite Julia Sugarbaker line? “I'm saying this is the South. And we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, Phyllis, no one in the South ever asks if you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on.” ‘Nuf said!
See you next week…
