Memos to:
1) ABC Daytime – do you really think that ANYONE will watch “The Chew,” over the broken bones of “All My Children”??? REALLY???![]()
2)
The cast of “Jersey Shore” (a) they speak a foreign language, you’re in Italy; (b) of course the food labels in the grocery store are in Italian (see [a] above); (c) you’re in Florence, I don’t think you can see the Vatican from your balcony; (d) DaVinci did NOT paint the ceiling of the aforementioned Vatican.
Daytime Report:
This was the last week for “All My Children,” and the TVJ cried through each episode. “AMC” morphed into “The 4400,” the late, lamented sci-fi drama about returning abductees. How many back-from-the-dead “AMC” stars can you put on the head of a pin? Apparently, almost all of them! Not only did Josh Duhamel and Esther Terblanche return as Leo and Gillian (if only for a dream sequence), but Cady McLain came back as Dixie, Thorsten Kaye as Zack and Alexa Havins (so wonderful as Esther in “Torchwood: Miracle Day”) as Babe, all from the dead.
Well, Babe was just a ghost, but she and real-life husband Justin Bruening (Jamie Martin) did show up. Everyone who has ever set foot in Pine Valley made a cameo, including Carol Burnett (Verla Grubbs), Eva LaRue (Maria Santos Grey), the much-missed David Canary (Adam Chandler), Julia Barr (Brooke), Lee Meriwether (Ruth Martin), sole original cast member (along with Susan Lucci) Ray MacDonnell, and now, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Geller’s return, as an apparently mentally ill young lady claiming to be Erica’s daughter being pursued by vampires, was hilarious. LaRue: “Vampires are very current now.” Gellar: “Oh, I was into vampires long before they became popular.” Buffy strikes again! Funnier even was Bruening showing up on Gellar's new show, "Ringers." But the best
return of all, predicted by the TVJ’s good pal Brian Scott Lipton, head honcho at TheaterMania.com, was Stuart Chandler, as portrayed (along with twin Adam) by the multi-Emmy Award-winning David Canary. As all gathered at the Chandler Mansion (forclosed upon when JR Chandler screwed up and bought in forclosure by Brooke English), toasts were made, memories were shared and Erica Kane lost her man. Yes, as she screamed "Jack, I need you!" Jack stopped, turned and said "Frankly, Erica, I don't give a damn what you need!" Erica vowed to get him back, and as the final scene came to a close, a shot rang out, fired by the now deranged JR. But who was shot? Erica? Marissa? Adam? Scott? Hopefully, Prospect Park will deliver on an "AMC" on the web, but what a perfect way to end 42 years of daytime on ABC. The TVJ’s first TV gig was as an extra on “All My Children,” spending a lot of time eating fake food at the “Goal Post.” ‘til we meet again, Pine Valley.
The 63rd Emmy Awards:
Let’s start with the worst opening since Rob Lowe & Snow White. Jane Lynch is so much
better than that, except for the section with “Mad Men.” The look on Elizabeth Moss’ face was priceless! Not so sure about the dresses, but the chorus has to go.
She eventually relaxed into her role as host and her interaction with Jon Hamm throughout the show, was hilarious. BEST MOMENTS: Fourth best moment: Peter Dinklage winning “Supporting Actor in a Drama” for “Game of Thrones.” Third best moment: Margo Martindale winning “Supporting Actress in a Drama” for ”Justified.” Second best moment: all the nominees for “Best Actress in a Comedy” running up on stage after
their names were read. Best moment: those same actresses celebrating Melissa McCarthy’s surprise, but much deserved win, for “Mike & Molly.” Who says you have to be tall or
a size 2 to snag an acting Emmy! Honorable Mention: the battle of the two Jimmy’s – Fallon and Kimmel – staged as a hilarious knock-down drag-out that should have been the opening.
“Roseanne’s Nuts”:
Watching this show over the summer was a reminder to the TVJ and to all the world, why Roseanne Barr is one of the most brilliant comedians on the planet. Whether it’s driving a tractor, saving the life of a pig, preparing an outrageous Passover dinner, entertaining Phyllis Diller and Sandra Bernhard, Grand Marshalling Gay Pride in Salt Lake City with her family, “Granny” going camping with her kids or home-schooling her grandsons, Roseanne is a force to be reckoned with. Underneath all the sarcasm and snarky put-downs, this is a family with a lot love in it and a lot of love to share. Unfortunately, Lifetime TV doesn’t see it that way and cancelled the series. Let’s hope that Roseanne will be back somewhere, some network, some day.
Next week, the TVJ takes on the new shows for the season.
