KT Sullivan photo by Maryann Lopinto                                                   Here's a unique look at a major musical event with the perspective – an exclusive with one who's elusive – and has never before granted a media interview. It's someone who has seen it all, who has much to recall, and only comes to town in the fall. Extremely small of stature, but mammoth in his influence, he is known by many just by his initials: D.O.C. When the three-night "Occupy Columbus Circle" event begins this week, otherwise known as the annual Cabaret Convention, a long parade of singers (on stage, not around the Circle) will bring with them the sparkle of sequins and the class of Cole Porter and his ilk. Every autumn in New York, why does it seem so exciting?

Jennifer Sheehan                 Jennifer Sheehan, whom Stephen Holden of The New York Times calls "a rising cabaret star," reprises her critically acclaimed '60s show, I Know a Place, for three nights in October at Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street. Backed by her trio led by music director James Followell on piano, Sheehan ranges far and wide into a kaleidoscope of styles to bring this 60's soundtrack to life. I Know a Place, which opened at Feinstein's in May, plays Metropolitan Room Thursday through Saturday, October 25, 26 and 27, all at 7pm.

Nashville Notes_logo_2                                                                                  My father and I were what you might call "estranged," and the only thing I got when he died was an odd little book with the rather cumbersome title Argument of Hugh M. Dorsey, Solicitor General, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, at the trial of Leo M. Frank, Charged with the murder of Mary Phagan. Hugh Dorsey was my grandfather and, after his frighteningly successful prosecution of Leo Frank, he was elected to two terms as Governor of Georgia, 1917 - 1921, From a very early age, I knew the story of Leo Frank.

Coco-Peru                                          MAC, Back Stage Bistro and GLAAD Media Award-winning drag sensation Coco Peru returns to NYC with the New York Premiere of MISS COCO PERU: SHE'S GOT BALLS. Written and performed by Clinton Leupp, performances run October 18 - 21, Thursday - Sunday at 7:30pm at The Laurie Beechman Theatre (inside West Bank Cafe at 407 West 42nd Street -- at Ninth Avenue, accessible from the A,C,E,N,R,V,F,1,2,3 trains at 42nd Street). Tickets are $22 with a $15 food/drink minimum per person, available at www.SpinCycleNYC.com or by calling 212-352-3101.

Jack Mr Bongo Costanzo                                                       Little did he know that when legendary Latin/jazz percussionist Jack Costanzo performed at Carnegie Hall with The Stan Kenton Orchestra on February 14, 1948, it would be more than a decade before his return to New York City in 1961 to play the famed Basin Street East with nightclub entertainer, Frances Faye.

Robert Cuccioli                                                                      Cuccioli leads the audience in a touching, warm, uplifting and humorous personal journey through his loves and losses using lyrics from musical standards of the 30's and 40's. Included are such classics as: "Ain't That A Kick In The Head," "All Of You," "Love Is Here To Stay," "A Fine Romance," "I Wanna Be Around," "Once Upon A Time," "Witchcraft," "All I Need Now Is The Girl," and many more. Of course, Robert will include as an encore, his signature song from Jekyll & Hyde, "This Is The Moment."

stacy sullivan                                     New York cabaret artist Stacy Sullivan announces New York performances at Metropolitan Room in It's A Good Day, A Tribute to Miss Peggy Lee. Stacy Sullivan, winner of the Back Stage Bistro Award and the MAC Award for Outstanding Female New York Debut, has appeared in venues across the country, from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York to the Ford Theatre in Hollywood. Ms. Sullivan notes, "We are thrilled to be appearing at Metropolitan Room. Peggy Lee loved to perform late, so Metropolitan Room's 11:30pm showtime is perfect for our us."

Rose HallNiteLifeExchange congratulates the Mabel Mercer Foundation and KT Sullivan on the opening of the 23rd Annual Cabaret Convention which is taking place at Rose Hall October 17-19.

photo John Clark                                         Joanna Strand, one of England's most exciting jazz and musical theatre performers, will make her New York cabaret debut at Metropolitan Room (34 West 22nd Street – between 5th & 6th Avenues) in Fly Transatlantic, an epic, yet beautifully contemplative, journey of musical discovery.

sharron                                                                       When singer Sharron Matthews first emerged on the New York nightlife scene three seasons ago, she went so far out on a limb as to bill herself as a "superstar" and claim this was the start of her "world domination tour." Indeed, a large section of the cabaret cognoscenti could scarcely believe that a virtual unknown, from as far away as Canada yet, would have the unmitigated gall to label herself thusly. But it was soon clear why the lady wholeheartedly deserves that moniker

T Oliver Reid                                                                        T. Oliver Reid, a veteran of numerous Tony Award winning Broadway musicals, 2012 MAC award recipient for Best Debut-male and the 2011 Julie Wilson award, will Debut at Feinstein's at Loews regency, 540 Park Avenue, Wednesday November 28, 2012, Sunday December 2, Monday December 3 and Sunday December 9, 2012. All four performances will be at 10:30pm.

thumb Ron Palillo                                                  On the morning of August 14th, 2012, the world lost a brilliantly wonderful gentleman to a fatal heart attack in the Palm Beach area of Florida. His full legal name was Ronald Gabriel Paolillo, but he was better known as Ron Palillo (and briefly as theatre actor Ron Paul Little). He was even better known than that as Arnold Horshack, one of the Sweathogs on the sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," in which he co-starred for four seasons on the ABC network with Gabe Kaplan, Marcia Strassman, Robert Hegyes, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and John Travolta.

Positions-NY-Poster                                              The New York premiere of Owen Dunne's new play Positions will be presented Off-Broadway this fall from October 10-21 at Roy Arias Studio Theatre (300 W. 43 St.) in Manhattan. Pick of the week

Bobby Short and Mabel MercerAIP Calling all icon-lovers and cabaret devotees!!

Recommended: A major cabaret event on Thursday honoring two icons who graced The Town Hall in a landmark concert 45 years ago....and the next day starts a three-dayweekend full of FREE cabaret events, some of which salute legends, too.  This week’s PICK is a double dip because these late-week back-to-back events are very special ones indeed. They are also obvious choices in my mind because, when asked, I always suggest that a busy person or a newcomer to cabaret go to an event with a large number of performers to get exposed to many in one night. And if the ticket money goes to a non-profit organization promoting cabaret, it’s another good reason! Speaking of money, who doesn’t appreciate a free cabaret event --- or a weekend cavalcade of ‘em?
