Mac_logoIn its latest in a series of free seminars for its members ($10 for non-members), MAC, the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs, will explore the topic of reviews and reviewers, with a panel of several of those critics.  “The Reviewers Speak Up!”-- It’s this Saturday afternoon, June 26, at 2pm at the Metropolitan Room.

Anyone serious about performing knows that one thing that can help (or hurt) is a published review; the objective stamp of approval or nail in the coffin, the instant visibility where you can get a pull quote to attach to your own announcements.  What are critics looking for?  How do you get them to know about you and attend your show?  What material should you provide for them?   What will properly set them up, or set them off?  What are the mistakes they’ve seen performers make over and over?  And who are these people anyway?  These things need not be a mystery-- they are the kinds of topics that will be addressed at this Saturday’s seminar.  Questions from the audience are especially welcome, so come to ask what you’ve always wanted to know.

As publisher of NiteLifeExchange.com, I’m pleased that three of the five participating reviewers invited by MAC are writers for this publication:  Sandi Durell and Rob Lester (both of whom also write for Cabaret Scenes Magazine and other outlets) and Daryl Glenn, also known as a performer who has garnered some of those reviews all performers need. His good reviews have helped him gain audiences as well as awards (Bistro, MAC and Nightlife), so he has that additional perspective.  These writers  join EdgeNewYork.com’s “Kevin on Kabaret” writer Kevin Scott Hall, also a singer and workshop leader, and veteran reviewer David Finkle from BackStage, now writing for BistroAwards.com and HuffingtonPost.com.

In the age of the internet, where a review can follow you forever thanks to the wonders of  search engines where anyone can type in your name or can easily stumble on an old review, it’s more important than ever to increase your chances of having those words be dazzling instead of damning.  Even performers who claim they never read their own reviews, or think a critic has no right to write, have to accept the reality that the words are out there in cyberspace, as well as  on paper.  A word to the wise, would be to come to this seminar’s reality check and check thing things out.
