DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITING AWARD
The recipient will receive $250 and a certificate.

Qualifications

•Songwriter must be age 40 or over.

•Songwriter cannot, thus far, have received significant recognition in the music industry, and may not previously, have won an award from MAC for songwriting.

•Songwriter must submit three songs (MP3 only) via email with accompanying lyrics in the body of the email only. No PDF or Word attachments or links.

•For each email, in the subject line, put your last name and the song title (i.e. Sondheim-“Send in the Clowns”).

•Each email must also contain your name, the name(s) of your collaborators and a contact phone number.

•Collaborations are eligible, provided that:

1. all of the collaborators meet the qualifications,

2. all three submitted songs were written by the same writing team, and

3. none of the collaborators is also submitting individually or is a member of another writing team that is entering into the competition.

2010 Selection committee: Adam Gwon (Fred Ebb Award & 2009 John Wallowitch Award winner), Brett Kristofferson (MAC, Bistro and 2009 Dottie Burman Award winner), esteemed reviewer and journalist Rob Lester, Thomas Honeck (MAC Award winner/booking manager of the Duplex) and special guest panelist, songwriter/musical director Rick Jensen (MAC Award winner).

 

The winners will be announced and invited to perform one of their songs at the MAC Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 16th (11:30am-1pm). (Winners will be notified by October 12th).

Dottie Burman was a singer, songwriter, entertainer and motivational speaker who brought the excitement of the New York theatrical scene to meetings and special events for organizations. John Wallowitch was a cabaret singer and prolific songwriter who was a colorful figure in the New York cabaret world for more than 40 years. The composer of more than 2,700 songs (by his own count, the majority unpublished), Mr. Wallowitch was a familiar face on New York television, beginning in 1980 with his cable-access show, “John’s Cabaret,” in which he played piano, sang and joked. With his owlish face, oversize glasses, bow tie and sly Cheshire cat grin, he was the dandified embodiment of a traditional piano man and seemed to know every obscure show tune ever written.  In 1984 he created a cabaret act with his partner, Bertram Ross, a former star dancer for Martha Graham, that told their combined life stories in a breezy, nostalgic mixture of song, storytelling and banter. It became the centerpiece of a 1999 documentary film about their shared lives, Wallowitch and Ross: This Moment, directed by Richard Morris
