Deep_Purple_DreamsA 2010 MAC Award Nominee (Best Recording), Julian Yeo is up for an award for this new CD Deep Purple Dreams. In this reviewer’s opinion he’s miles ahead of the competition vying to win this coveted award.

It is a beautifully produced record consisting of thirteen gorgeous standards sung by an exciting young singer, interestingly arranged and played by inspired musicians.

Yeo and his outstanding musical director, pianist Jesse Gelber, along with rhythm section Doug Largent on bass and Kevin Dorn on  drums plus jazz strings, Nick Russo on guitar and Alan Grubman on violin, make a lot of music. They give us fresh versions of a tasty group of well known and well loved American songs.

Julian Yeo, an Australian of Asian background who now lives in New York, brings a deep love, respect and understanding of the work of the good composers and lyricists of the last century. He’s a young man, but his style is imbued with the spirit of the popular singers of the past who made the songs such an integral part of American musical life. Every cut on the disc is a jewel. He opens with a perfect take on “No Moon at All” (Evans/Mann). If you want to enjoy a sensitive treatment of “Close Your Eyes” (Bernice Petkere), Legrand’s “I Will Wait for You” and break your heart with Jobim’s “How Insensitive,” buy this CD. You will play it over and over.

That’s why Julian Yeo’s Deep Purple Dreams, along with his first CD Old New, Borrowed Blue, deserves the spot on top of the pile of my favorite CDs.

Dear Eligible MAC Awards Voters,

The excitement of the Awards season is upon us and NiteLifeExchange.com congratulates all the nominees for this year’s MAC Awards. It is essential that all MAC members carefully go over the ballots you will be receiving and then VOTE.  The ballots have to be returned by April 27th. That gives you a chance to see many of the shows nominated as many are playing over the next few weeks. Remember, you are only supposed to vote for work THAT YOU HAVE SEEN. Get out and see as many nominated shows and performers as you can, and then remember to VOTE…..Vote for the best work you have seen.  Yes You Can!!

Sincerely,
