In the elegant atmosphere of Feinstein’s at the Loews Regency, you will find two relaxed friends whoopin’ it up, singing some of the greatest songs from the American Songbook. What could be more exciting than listening to the remarkable Barbara Cook (www.BarbaraCook.com)and the dreamy-toned Michael Feinstein (www.MichaelFeinstein.com) together on stage? Since Feinstein has moved away from sitting behind the piano to performing upfront at the mic, he has grown exponentially as a major impressive singer with knock out vocals on “You’re Gonna Hear from Me” and “Without A Song,” the latter shifting from soft ballad to quick time to swing.
Ms. Cook was given the spotlight as she, once again, proved that it’s all about her masterful interpretation of lyrics on such gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” which she delivered with a special urgency. The song was preceded by her saying she was never really fond of Cole Porter’s lyrics until she began listening more intently. Poignant pearls “Where Do You Start” and “Here’s to Life” are rightfully owned by this great icon.
Feinstein has shown himself as a great benefactor to young singers and songwriters and performed the beautiful title love song from the musical “Ever After,” written by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, (www.marcyandzina.com) who were sitting up front.
Sondheim, one of Barbara Cook’s favorite songwriters, wasn’t neglected as the two performed a playful duet of “You Could Drive A Person Crazy.”
The song mix was eclectic, the team of Feinstein & Cook magical, all adding up to an evening of the most pleasurable entertainment one could wish to experience. To top it off, opening night was Michael’s birthday and many celebs were in the audience to wish him well, including Regis & Joy Philbin, Kathy Lee Gifford, Doris Roberts and Henry Winkler.
Musical Director/Pianist John Oddo was brilliant along with band members Aaron Heick/reeds; George Rabbai/trumpet; Warren Odze/drums and David Finck/bass. The show runs thru October 2nd! (www.feinsteinsatloewsregency.com) (212)339-4095.
