The "language'' of music is most beautifully expressed visa-vie the human voice in all it's wondrous capabilities, i.e. color, timbre, exression, et al. And, this sums up my reaction to the no-nonsense vocalise of one jazz singer extraordinaire Sophia Shorai. Sophia bares herself bravely with her version of the American Songbook with just piano accompinament. The result is in a word compelling and or striking!!
One simply enjoys the expressive, emotional, yielding, welcoming, accepting, and enduring quality which Sophia delivers vocally to nudge our musical sensibilities in a strong and viable manner. Subjectively speaking, I must pay tribute to her strong level of animation in the way she handles both the melody and lyrics of her chosen songs. A sort of emphasis that ultimately gives way to the feeling expressed in her delivery. Sophia's new CD project is a study in the potential instinctive naturalness that is possible in music and her successful attempt to bring to the American Songbook an emotional language that is both pleasureable and lasting.
