Dan Block, (sax-man/Clari-man extraordinaire) is one of those ''sleepers'' with enormous talent(s). The question for me is: Where in the hell has he been all my life? Or, so many great artists, so little time, etc. etc. Dan has put together a powerful brute force group to interpret Duke Ellington's music, our beloved ''American Jazz Maestro.'' The utter liveliness of Dan's efforts is manifest in the happy feelings we imbibe as we take in the jaunty rhythms contained within his project. I particularly love the expressive power that emanates from both Dan and his sidemen with their melodic/harmonic inspirations. This is potent music interpreted with all the inate primitive, elemental, and natural music which was the hallmark of the genius of Duke's music. Last, I can only believe that this disc will engender nothing but universal appeal to all my readers, thus my strong recommendation to go out and but this fine CD.
