According to the 2000 Census, 8 percent of same-sex couples reported having an adopted child in their household. In 2010, that number jumped to 19 percent, proving that more and more gays and lesbians are raising children, no matter how hard certain groups try to take away their rights. After adopting a 5-year-old boy from Compton, Calif. in 2010, comedian and actor Alec Mapa and his husband, film producer Jamison Hebert, will add to the statistics when the next Census is conducted in eight years.

The creators of Face Off Unlimited -- Jay Painter, Eric Robinson and Joe Tex -- don’t want their live show A Whole ‘Nother Level, which debuted to a packed house at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City on September 28, to be viewed as just another improv show. And while the performance is technically long-form improvisation, it is much more than that.

This French film is very light, in the tradition of the superior American comedy, The Wedding Crashers. A mainstream picture, it is not the type of fare that is usually offered by New York’s IFC, where it opens September 10th in tandem with its availability on the In-Demand feature of cable TV. Calling all icon-lovers and cabaret devotees!!
Recommended: A major cabaret event on Thursday honoring two icons who graced The Town Hall in a landmark concert 45 years ago....and the next day starts a three-dayweekend full of FREE cabaret events, some of which salute legends, too. This week’s PICK is a double dip because these late-week back-to-back events are very special ones indeed. They are also obvious choices in my mind because, when asked, I always suggest that a busy person or a newcomer to cabaret go to an event with a large number of performers to get exposed to many in one night. And if the ticket money goes to a non-profit organization promoting cabaret, it’s another good reason! Speaking of money, who doesn’t appreciate a free cabaret event --- or a weekend cavalcade of ‘em?
